Mr. Magoo, the aging brain, & something else I forgot...

Yesterday on my drive to work, I slowed to allow a small white plastic bag time to cross the street. "That's it, move along little fella." (to be read in Mr. Magoo voice - which, by the way, Aug does so well) Anyway, in dawn's early light I imagined it was what? calling close to the ground: an albino ferret?! Then last night, Brian Williams (that nice young man on NBC Nightly News) tells me that the reason old people forget things is that the aging brain loses its ability to filter out irrelevant information, so the brain is overloaded and easily distracted. Q. How am I going to know when this is happening to me? I have always preferred the irrelevant information. Yes, I know the two word answer to that question: albino ferret.

Social Gerontology: A Multidisciplinary Perspective (8th Edition) States:

"Another explanation for this [is] 'perceptual speed'--the time required to recognize stimulus and respond to it--deteriorates with aging. According to this theory, older people have more problems holding information in their working memory while receiving stimuli . . . This is compounded by the possibility that it takes longer for older people to ignore irrelevant stimuli and complete working memory tasks. For example, if an oler driver is trying to locate a street address that was just given, but is also listening to the radio, the driver is less likely to remember the address than would a younger driver in the same situation. The elderly are also often distracted by plastic bags blowing in the wind, and sparkly things."

or it may have actually been a small chi-wa-wa dressed in a Target bag strolling to work.

I see dressed dogs often around town.

actually a dressed dog is a hotdog with all the toppings served at world famous hot dog stands ...I remember a few great hot dog places in my travels... the Varsity in atlanta georgia..a two story drivein hamburger and dog place near Georgia Tech.......and mel's hot dogs in tampa.
