oats of Steel

s
So I kept hearing about Steel Cut Oats and finally bought some. I was a little taken back at the cost ($3.50 as my usual oatmeal is about $1.50)....I get the box home and open it up and see little rabbit pellets!...this disturbs me...but I figure WTF...start to fix a batch and read the instructions  which say to cook 20 - 25 minutes.....the old regular oatmeal takes about 5 mins.......and I honestly did not taste that much difference....just the texture ..... I am wondering what the big deal is about these steel cut oats? I'm just askin!

From what I've heard steel-cut oats are better for your digestive tract. They help to keep you from getting colon cancer.

However, they don't plump up when cooked like regular oatmeal. Problem being: if your watching your weight and measure out a 1/2 cup serving that's all you get! They don't become a 1 cup serving when boiled. So they seem to be as filling (they do have more fiber) but they look pretty measly in the bowl.

I heart steel cut oats.

Around this house we call them "special oats". We get them in bulk. Add some dried currants, some non-fat yogurt, half a banana, and some cinnamon and you've got yourself a special breakfast, friends. One way to cook them is to cook them part way the night before, put them in the fridge, then cook them some more in the a.m. Overnight they soak up a lot of the water and get plumper.
