PDO

today on the radio listening to "The Splendid Table" and felt the need to share this with yall incase it ever comes up on the final round of Jeopardy and you need it to win:
This  EU scheme known as PDO (protected designation of origin) promotes and protects names of quality agricultural products and foodstuffs.
This scheme encourages diverse agricultural production, protect product names from misuse and imitation and help consumers by giving them information concerning the specific character of the products:
·         PDO- covers agricultural products and foodstuffs which are produced, processed and prepared in a given geographical area using recognized know-how.
while i was finding this out, I also read about Prosciutto and feel obligated to pass this along

some public bathrooms are strange...........

so I go to a local church thrift store the other day in Gulfport. I find the public bathroom and walk in thinking I might take a pee while shopping around. This strange assortment of items was in the bathroom. A woman's head with a scarf around it was staring straight at me or anyone else that wanted to avail themselves of the facility. I changed my mind about peeing and backed out of the bathroom.

Florida Flea Markets have interesting items............

I could make a fortune if.................

I could come up with some way to block out political ads on tv. I think people would be willing to pay about $5 a month to never see or hear any of these BS ads. Is there anyway to get comcast or brighthouse to stop sending these ads to our caves????

so how much propane is left in the tank?

THREE WAYS TO FIGURE OUT HOW MUCH IS LEFT

The average full-size gas grill goes through about 1 pound of propane for every 30 minutes of cooking time. But how many of us cook with a stopwatch? There are a few simple ways of determining how much propane is left in the tank.

1 The bathroom-scale method.

A normal-size 20-pound capacity tank weighs 17 to 18 pounds empty, and 34 to 35 pounds after being filled. To determine how much gas is left, weigh the tank and subtract 18 pounds for the tank; multiply this number by 30 to determine approximately how many minutes of grilling time are left.

(weigh the tank -- 18 * 30 = minutes of grilling time are left)

2. The gadget method.

A gauge, such as the Gasgard unit shown (above) costs about $20 and will give you a constant readout on how much gas is left, in the tank.

3. The seat-of-the-pants method.

Pour hot water over a section of your o o tank, then run your hand up and down ii' the side. The part of the tank that turns warm is empty; the part that feels cool is full. You can get an idea of how much propane is left based on this. At least one propane-exchange company - Blue Rhino - includes a disk on its tank that, with the help of hot tap water, will let you know when there's less than 2 hours of grill time left. Tapeon gauges, like the one shown (above), are also available. If you still need backup insurance, you have three options: Keep a filled spare propane tank on hand, convert your grill to natural gas, or buy a product like the Flame Saver tank, which provides an extra 60 minutes of grilling time with the flick of a switch when your main tank runs out.

Boan Art in Gulfport

Is this like the most beautiful fountain or what? The best artist in the village made this. I am going to see if she will make several for our yard and we will never have to water the plants! Honestly, Boan has an amazing ability for producing beautiful art in every imaginable media.

one of the best emails I have received lately.......

From Boan:
"Those two bottles are waiting for you in your fridge.
I pureed the lemon and orange pulp and poured it into the little spout. It will be walking and dancing on it's own when yall get down this way........ "

I saw this recipe in an old cook book Maggie gave me. "Bill Cook and Authentic Historical Recipes and Practices", 1960, Herter's Inc, Waseca, Minnesota.  I want someone to make this and let me know what it tastes like: Take a hamburger bun and lightly butter both sides. on one side put mustard and catsup or tomato sauce. on the other side put a thin raw hamburger.raw onions and sliced dill pickle. carefully put the two pieces of the bun together.  place in a small covered baking dish or wrap in aluminum foil. put in the oven  at 400 degrees and bake for about 40 mins. remove and "leave" cool for a bit. take a knife and fork and cut the burger into 4 parts and eat. Bill Cook says "The butter, hamburger juice, onion juice and pickle juice baked catsup and mustard blend into a taste you would not recognize. a very wonderful recipe be sure to try it "

I will forward a crisp new dollar bill to anyone that makes this, eats it, and sends me a review.

Anasazi beans aint bad

So I am walking around the grocery store yesterday and see some beans called Anasazi. They look like red speckled beans and I have never heard of them. The bag states they were grown since 130 AD in Mesa Verde Colorado by the Indians. So I buy a bag, bring them home, and fix them. Put some onions, spices, and a couple pieces of bacon in a pot with some water, simmer for a few hours. Then eat them served over some good ole cornbread, chopped up onions, and some balsamic vinegar. were pretty good....tasted a bit like  black eyed peas.  Made me feel kinda like I was eating with the Indians.

Tablespoons of Tomato Paste

Often you only need one or two tablespoons of tomato paste at a time. What do you do with what’s left in the can? Try dividing the paste into exact tablespoon measures on a plate, and place the plate in the freezer. Once the dollops of paste are frozen solid, transfer them to a resealable plastic bag, and place the bag in the freezer. This way you’ll always have exact measures of tomato paste on hand!

And as I have advised previously, you can do the same with bacon grease in plastic ice trays! Does the fun ever end?????

How's this for a coincidence? Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln were born in the same year, on the same day: Feb. 12, 1809. As historical facts go, it amounts to little more than a footnote. Still, while it's just a coincidence, it's a coincidence that's guaranteed to make you do a double take the first time you run across it.

Ok so I joined weight watchers on-line...

Not wanting to wait and join all the other losers that decide to join weight watchers on January 1st as their new years resolution, I joined weight watchers on line ..... again....... a few days ago. I just finished my first week and posted my new weight Friday. I was impressed with the immediate high tech text message I received from WW: " So big boy, it looks like you gained a bit this week. Is this what you expected?  It looks like you were eating for the winter and trying to see how much body weight  you could actually put on before the next freeze?  Do you live north of the Arctic Circle? We are just sayin that perhaps you don't understand the concept of Weightwatchers?  The  game plan is to LOSE weight each week not GAIN weight each week. Are you with us on this fine point? And we are just wondering ,if you  have some ideas about what to change for  the weigh-in  this coming week? If you’re not sure what happened, look back over the last week and think about what you might be able to change.(We mean come on man, you are allowed 40 points a day and you averaged...yes we said .AVERAGED 75  points a day. ) Are you serious? Can you do it? Will you?

PS: We suggest that you reevaluate your membership commitment from a three month payment plan to a day by day plan.

Papa, where do reindeer come from?

Went to a neighbor's house for cocktails-n-cookies tonight. On our way home, well, it was actually out of the way by a half-block, we visited the reindeer display at another neighbor's house. Jay, having had a few too many rudolphs, decided to give baby Grayson a mini-lesson in livestock husbandry. A photo-opportunity if there ever was one, kids.

Oh, my!

Is america great or what????

As the Tim Tebow legend has grown, some wags have spoofed on his religion and miracle-making ways and said they won't believe in him until he performs a Jesus-like feat and turns the Gatorade into wine.
Well, how about beer?
The Bonfire Brewery, according to its Facebook page, is on the case. The Colorado brewery today posted an image of a kneeling (or "Tebowing") Tebow lookalike, in silhouette, holding a beer mug. And made this accompanying announcement about Tebrew beer:
"Tebrew Sunday Sipper -- a barleywine from Bonfire -- is almost here. In the style of 4th quarter heroics, we're waiting until the last minute to serve it up -- the moment the 10 oz. glasses arrive, the real games can begin. Stay tuned."

Rats have feelings too...........

I really don't give a rat's ass if you care about rats or not....but this story on NPR the other day was very interesting.......something to think about when you are done with all your chores, relaxing in the big chair in front of the fire place:

A new study found that rats are actually quite willing to come to another rat's aid, freeing a rat trapped in a container. And they're not just doing it for a dose of sugar water or some other reward; they're doing it out of empathy of the other rat's plight."
