hey lady, wanna banana for your monkey?

I read about a banana diet that was big in Japan in the newspaper the other day. I was in the king sooper and snagged a fl yer on the diet, put out by Dole the banana people. The part that caught my eye was the 'why it works section: Bananas contain resistant starch which ferments in your large intestines, creating by-products (butyrates) that block conversion of some carbohydrates into fuel"'

So I am guessing if we eat Styrofoam and block our intestines we would get the same benefits? Just wondering.

PS I hope polvo will look up 'butyrates' and share the meaning.

Great question about styrofoam. Resistant starch is eaten by the bacteria in your large intestines (beneficial, good for your bacteria that are naturally there). These bacteria release short-chain fatty acids, one of which is butyrate. For some reason, and we don't know why, resistant starch makes more butyrate than other types of fibers tested. Butyrate is used as energy by colon cells. It is also believed to trigger the release of hormones that chemically signal your brain that you're full and not hungry (glucagon-like peptide-1 and Peptide YY). Because resistant starch is fermented very slowly, it is fermented for hours, which triggers the release of these feel full hormones for hours. Numerous studies have shown that when people eat resistant starch, they're less hungry - even the next day. If you're interested, go to www.resistantstarch.com to learn more. In contrast, styrofoam is like wheat fiber. It isn't fermented but simply provides bulking and helps to move everything through the intestines. Not at all the same.

Thanks to the American Society of Microbiology for comments and TMI. I feel bloated after reading all that...but I can't wait to work the word butyate into daily conversations!!!
